The Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, is developing a long‑term transport plan for the region — and residents are being invited to share their views. This is a valuable opportunity to help shape how people travel over the next 15 years.
The plan aims to make transport across the region:
- More affordable and reliable
- Better connected across buses, trains, cycling and walking
- Simpler to use, without needing cash for every journey
- More accessible for everyday travel
Below are the four key priorities we believe the Mayor should focus on and you may wish to highlight them in your response too:
Highways & Roadworks
- We want transport improvements that prioritise sustainable travel, especially buses. Measures like bus lanes and bus‑priority signals help keep buses moving reliably, even during busy times.
- When roadworks are planned, bus routes should always be considered first to minimise disruption. Major works should be coordinated so buses aren’t affected by multiple closures at once, helping people continue their journeys with confidence.
Infrastructure
- Investing in strong electrical grid connections at all bus depots will support greener, more affordable bus services in the future. This removes cost barriers and ensures all areas can benefit equally.
- Bus stops and hubs should be safe, clean, well-lit and weather‑proof, with clear and reliable digital information. Good access routes to and from stops are also essential.
Planning Policy
- New housing developments should be designed around good public transport links—not car dependence. Connecting new homes directly to existing transport networks helps create thriving, accessible communities.
Service Support
- Some bus routes are essential for social and economic reasons but may not be commercially viable. Long-term funding is needed to keep these services running so people can rely on them for work, education and everyday life.
